Supplier Development Specialist needed



About the role

Tenzing Marketing is looking for a supplier development specialist to join their team for a 6-month fix-term contract. The role is employed to work on the SPAR account only.


Contract start date

1 June 2022 – 30 November 2022


Salary

R18 000 – R25 000 – Depending on experience


Future opportunity

Option to apply for the full-time role from December 2022 onwards. 

Location: This is a remote position, candidates based in KZN are preferred due to proximity to SPAR Central Office.

Tenzing is a strategic communications company that specializes in the food industry. Together with SPAR, we have developed a Supplier Development Programme to help manage, educate and grow suppliers’ food safety compliance status.


Purpose of the job

To provide leadership in growing and maintaining the SPAR Supplier Development Program for micro and small suppliers who either wish to join the SPAR family and/or are currently supplying one or more stores. To educate, train and support the SPAR retailers on importance of Food Safety with suppliers.

Legislation & Regulatory Compliance

Major task

  • Educate relevant stakeholders on the importance of food safety compliance and their role in ensuring a compliance culture for the SPAR group.
  • Provide support and guidance to regional operations teams and retailers in terms of their responsibilities and appropriate responses to achieving compliance.
  • Conduct research and liaise with relevant authorities (legislators, industry bodies, auditors, etc.) to compile recommendations for the business and present to relevant stakeholders in order to facilitate understanding and application.

Measurement

  • Stakeholder feedback/frequent meetings.
  • Successful growth of small suppliers on the platform.
  • Minimal or no damage to the SPAR Group brand. 
  • Adherence to the SPAR Group’s policies and procedures.

System Admin - Training & Development

Major task

  • Monitor the SPAR Supplier Development system, analyses risks arising from business activities and formulate measures to address them.
  • Develop and recommend best food safety operating practice for SPAR Supplier Development system. Add new content and maintain the web system.
  • Manage the SPAR preferred service providers on the SPAR Supplier Development Program.
  • Verify supplier accounts and documents.
  • Build and maintain the website.
  • Development and test new system functionality with Tenzing Marketing.
  • Implement strategies to grow site usage.
  • Maintain all content relating to all aspects of the site i.e.: Respond to Q&A.
  • Maintain relationships and support retailers in the use of the site.
  • Train the Regional Operations Team’s and specialist to help the stores on how to use the site.
  • Attend relevant government and industry training or workshops to maintain current legislation knowledge and impart this knowledge to the business.
  • Develop training material for use by suppliers, retailers and retail operations teams.
  • Present food safety training on various platforms, e.g., cell meetings, members meetings, MIP, Good Food Fundi, retail operations meetings, supplier forums.
  • Host and present regional food handler training sessions for retailers.
  • Support retailers reach their food safety targets and obtain buy-in and commitment.

Measurement

  • Achieve agreed annual new enhancements/upgrades to the site.
  • Achieve agreed targets for site usage.
  • Achieve content relevance to SPAR Food Safety strategy.
  • Availability of updated training manuals and videos.
  • Stakeholder feedback / frequent meetings.


Administration and Reporting

Major task

  • Provide oversight of data collection, trend analysis and reporting.
  • Manage the SPAR Supplier Development programme database.
  • Present to retail operations management, the supplier results and retailer compliance status.
  • Compile management reports that will contribute to management’s informed decision-making in order to protect the SPAR Group’s brand.
  • Support food safety culture initiatives and facilitate these through the SPAR Supplier Development programme

SKILLS PROFILE

Educational & Technical Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in a food-related discipline with preference to food science, food technology, microbiology, public health or related discipline.
  • Sound understanding of South African food safety regulations.
  • Food Safety Management System qualifications in PRP’s and GHP, HACCP, ISO 22000, GFSI Intermediate, FSSC 22000 and BRC.
  • Knowledge of food safety basics: temperatures, proper food handling, sanitation, proper cooling methods, microbiology (including sampling of swabs and product or lab analysis). 
  • Ability and familiarity to deliver food hygiene training to SPAR Merchandise and Operations


Previous Work Experience

  • Previous experience of at least 3 years as a hygiene auditor or quality-related role in a food manufacturing environment (post-qualification).
  • 3 – 5 years experience in hospitality, retail or FMCG.
  • 2 – 3 years food safety training experience for retail.
