UP study raises concerns over listeria monocytogenes
findings at abattoirs and retailers
Once again, Listeria hits the headlines! Red flags are being raised thanks to research done by the University of Pretoria. Their research determined that a number of chilled carcasses sampled at abattoirs in one of the provinces were contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Even more concerning were the findings of the pathogen in beef and beef products sampled in retail outlets in North West, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng, including ready-to-eat items.
The University is calling on government and industry stakeholders to act on these findings and introduce strict control and monitoring measures at the appropriate stages in the beef production system. Read the full article here

Fry's wins plant based labelling appeal

| Plant-based food brand, Fry Family Foods, has won their appeal against the Food Safety Agency (FSA) and the Red Meat Industry Forum (RMIF). Fry’s lodged the appeal last year in objection to a direction issued by the FSA on 5th July 2022 that declared the naming and labelling of six of Fry’s products in contravention of Regulation R1283 (the Processed Meat Regulations).
