  • In recent developments, the submission date for the Labelling Regulations has been extended to 21 September, allowing the industry further time to have its say! 

    August, as always, brings the focus on women in the industry. It is encouraging to see so much in the media about dedicated, passionate individuals who are making a difference in the food industry and when it comes to food safety.

    Legislation in the Spotlight...

    The Minister of Health has extended the comment period for the Regulations
    relating to the Labelling and Advertising of Foodstuffs, R3337 of 21 April.
    This includes all other notices (R3287 and R3320).

    The new deadline is 21 September 2023.

    Also open for comment is the Draft Export Standards for Canned and Pickled Veg.

    The Safety of the Laxoperidase System

    The Lactoperoxidase system (LPS) is used in many parts of the world to protect raw milk destined for processing and dairy products, particularly in remote areas where farmers are not near the market. The use is mainly intended to boost the natural LP in raw milk, suppressing microbiological growth to be used as a processing aid to extend the shelf life of a variety of dairy products.

    The LPS is a natural defense system against microbial contamination. It has been reviewed by a number of international organizations, including WHO, because of its use for the treatment of raw milk and other dairy products.     The benefits of the use of the Lactoperoxidase system (LPS) in the dairy industry

    The biological properties of milk promote the development of microorganisms which may compromise its quality.  Consequently, the use of techniques for preserving the milk matrix from its collection until processing is necessary. While refrigeration on the farm and refrigerated transport of milk from the farm to the processing plant has become the norm in the commercial dairy industry, this option is not always available in the informal sector.

    The application of the so-called lactoperoxidase system (LPS) has been suggested, particularly in raw milk preservation, in situations where prompt refrigeration is difficult, and especially in developing countries and during extended or continuous failure of the electricity supply.
