Many in the food industry have long been hoping for a greater focus on food safety and it finally seems to be taking shape.
Government is calling for registration of spaza shops and other small medium business enterprises as one of the measures to mitigate the current outbreak of foodborne illnesses and illicit trade in South Africa. Another strategy they are launching is a public education campaign aimed at children, parents, caregivers and the broader community on food safety and the identification, handling and storage of dangerous chemicals.
