SGS South Africa launches the FSSC Development Program

In 2020 The Foundation for Food Safety System Certification (FSSC) launched its Development Program, providing an assessment model that's aligned with the Codex General Principles of Food Hygiene. The FSSC Development Program offers a series of clear steps to develop a food safety management system. It also provides a clear pathway for organisations to achieve full FSSC certification in the future.

Depending on the size of your business, the assessment will take anywhere from one to three days and there are no additional scheme owner fees. The program is split into two levels of unaccredited assessments, although the FSSC Integrity Program does monitor the quality of these assessments.  Companies that are found to conform to the program’s standards are then listed on the FSSC’s publicly available register.

FSSC 22000 is a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) benchmarked food safety standard. FSSC 22000 is based on the widely recognised Food Management System Standard ISO 22000, the industry-relevant Pre-Requisite Program (PRP) and FSSC defined additional requirements.

SGS will continue to offer the GFSI global markets program

Launched in 2015, progression through the GFSI Global Markets Program (second edition) is facilitated through, open-access toolkits that guide, companies through three pre-certification stages: Self-Assessment, Basic and, Intermediate. The latter two stages, require unaccredited assessments based, on food safety systems, good manufacturing procedures, and appropriate control of food hazards.  The assessment is based upon observing daily activities within key production areas and lasts between one to one and a half days. There are no additional scheme owner fees.  After any non-conforming practices have been addressed and rectified, companies will be presented with an unaccredited letter of recognition complete with a compliance score.
