How do I apply for NON-GMO certification in South Africa?

Exporting crops that may be GMO in South Africa

Certain markets require certification that the crops they import are not genetically modified. If you are exporting crops then you would need to apply for certification from the Department of Agriculture, Land reform and rural development. This would specifically apply to the presence of or absence of GMOs using the PCR testing method (quantitative testing) and the gene(s) tested for all events approved in South Africa. The test result should indicate a maximum of 1% presence of GMO in order for a GMO status certificate to be issued.

What about other crops?

In addition to legal requirements, selling food and/or feed that is non-genetically modified (non-GMO) places the burden of proof on the supply chain. There are several certification bodies that can apply private standards to help organizations, irrespective of type or size, to supply the verifiably non-GMO product. The scope of certification can extend from a single actor in the supply chain, a few or even the whole production process.

These standards are usually based on EU regulations concerning non-GMO, including Directive 2001/18/EC and regulations 1829/2003 and 1830/2003 or FDA requirements.

The company achieving certification will be subject to annual surveillance audits to ensure that compliance is maintained. NON-GMO Supply Chain certification does not replace compliance with national and international regulations.

CAUTION

Please note that there are many private standards and you would be well advised to consult with your customer to ensure you select a company that they accept as this is a costly exercise.

Also bear in mind that laboratory testing will be required to verify the GMO content or absence thereof. Please also be advised that non-GMO certification may be regional so a USA verification may not be accepted in the Eu and vice versa.
